    * The Preparatory Council of the  1999 North America Taiwan Studies Conference dedicates this panel in memory of Mr.  Chih-Ching Wang, a former member of the 1999 NATSC Directors of the Board.   Chih-Ching was a Ph.D. student of sociology at the University of Washington and was  specialized in economic sociology under the advisory of professor Gary Hamilton. His  previous paper, entitled "Networking: The Dynamic of Economic Activities in  Taiwan", was presented at the forth annual NATSC meeting in 1998 and was considered  one of the outstanding scholarship in the NATSCs.  On December 25, 1998, he  disappeared in a boating accident at a lake near Seattle, Washington.  Before the  tragedy took place, Chih-Ching proposed a research paper, "Institutions, Networks,  and Agencies: A Comparative Study of Taiwanese Economy," to the 1999 NATSC review  committee.  Though his abstract was accepted by the NATSC, unfortunately, he was  unable to finish this project and to present this paper at this year's conference.
