The 1999 North America Taiwan Studies Conference Organized byThe Preparatory Council for the 1999 North America Taiwan Studies Conference
Purpose
The Preparatory Council aims to promote Taiwan studies, to enhance interaction between the academic community in Taiwan and its
counterpart in North America, and to facilitate communication among graduate students and scholars currently at work in Taiwan studies and related areas.Among the objectives of the
Preparatory Council are the holding of an annual Taiwan Studies Conference in North America and the publication of the research papers collected from the annual conferences.

Subject |
We encourage participants from all disciplines to contribute to the study of Taiwan and the understanding of the changes in all
aspects that are experienced in current Taiwanese society. Here are some suggested areas of topics:
- Literature, history, and cultural studies: languages, literature, collective memories, cultural beliefs and practices, and religions in Taiwan
- Political and social changes: democratization, electoral politics, nationalism, state and society relations, social movements, class relations, identity, and ethnic relations
- Economic development: economic restructuring , global challenges, urban and rural development and public policies
- Aborigines studies
- Gender and Sexuality Studies
- Environmental Studies
- Education
- International Relations: national security, Taiwan-China relations, and Taiwan-U.S. relations
Participants are not confined to the topics suggested above. However, as clearly this is a Taiwan studies conference, the context of the paper should be centered on Taiwan or relate to
Taiwan to a great degree. |
Paper Style |
Manuscripts must be typed (in English or Chinese), double spaced, and include an abstract (in English) of no more than 300 words,
with papers up to 35 pages in length. Manuscripts should follow accepted academic formats. We recommend The Chicago Manual of Style. |
Selection of Paper |
Papers are selected through a process of blind readings. All readers are scholars from relevant fields. |
Deadline |
December 1, 1998:
for an abstract (in English) of no more than 300 words. March 1, 1999:
for 3 copies of the paper along with a disk in Word or Dos format. |

Registration Fees |
Per Person Registration Fees:
- $130 U.S. for students; $150 U.S. for non-students before April 15, 1999
- $150 U.S. for students; $170 U.S. for non-students after April 15, 1999
