The 1998 North America Taiwan Studies Conference
-  Putting Taiwan in Global Perspective

Organized by

The Preparatory Council for the 1998 North America Taiwan Studies Conference

Purpose

The Preparatory Council aims to promote Taiwan studies, to enhance interaction between the academic community in Taiwan and its counterpart in North America, and to facilitate communication among graduate students and scholars currently at work in Taiwan studies and related areas.

Among the objectives of the Preparatory Council are the holding of an annual Taiwan Studies Conference in North America and the publication of the research papers collected from the annual conferences.

Cosponsored by

Taiwan Research Fund
and
The Unviersity of Texas at Austin,
the Center for Asian Studies.

Date May 29 - June 1, 1998
Location The University of Texas at Austin
Subjects We encourage participants to suggest topics and organized panels. Panels
on literature and language have already been suggested and are being
developed. Participants should think creatively, but we do require that

panels.  Papers on the following topics are of particular interest:
  •  Culture, Belief and National Identity: Religion and Literature in Taiwan
  •  Engendering Democracy: Women's Movements and Feminist Issues
  •  History and Emergent Identities: Negotiating Post-Colonialism
  •  Building the New Democracy: Institutions, Social Policies and Political Reform, Global Challenges, Economic Restructuring and State-Society Relations, National Security, Foreign Policy and Taiwan-China Relations
